Wave Starts and Swim Caps

You must start in your assigned wave and wear the swim cap you were given at packet pickup. If you are a tenative swimmer you will be given the opportunity at packet pickup to identify yourself and you will receive a different colored cap as a sign to the lifeguards that you might need additional vigilance.

Retro Tri Swim Course

Course Description

All swims will start on the west side of the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf. Swim buoys will be set based on currents and position of the fixed finger buoys. All swimmers will swim in a clockwise direction around the buoys, keeping the buoys to their right shoulders. At the completion of the swim course swimmers will exit onto the beach and run up the beach through the marker flags and up the boardwalk path to the Cowell Beach parking area. From there they will be directed up to Depot Park on the trail that starts at the National Marine Sanctuary Building.

The water temperature in Monterey Bay in August is between the mid-fifty and low sixty degree range. Wetsuits are highly recommended, although not required.

Forward Progress

You may use a surfboard or buoy for resting, but not for forward progress. If the lifeguards make a determination that you need to be rescued or removed from the water for any reason their determination is final. You will not be permitted to proceed on the race if you are removed during the swim.
